Search becomes conversation
Users no longer search: they express an intention and delegate selection, synthesis, and response to the system. And in that same response, AI decides how it represents us.
With AI Mode as the global default of Google Search, this behavior is not a niche: it is the most widespread of the three adoption routes, and the only one that reaches people inside a path they already knew.
The chapter covers two moments of the same phenomenon, because they happen in the same response.
The first three pages describe what changes for the user: they express an intention instead of a query, arrive at the service already oriented, and lose the lateral exposure to what they had not asked for.
The next four describe what changes for whoever gets searched for. When the summary replaces the list of links, someone decides what to say about us, and it is not us. This is the part of the phenomenon where the business has no minimum position: on the other adoption routes you can decide not to be there — not add a chat, block agents — here you cannot. You can choose not to tend it, you cannot choose not to be interpreted, because the interpretation forms on material we do not publish.
These four follow a declared hierarchy, from the phenomenon with the most leverage to the one with the least. Representation forms in the 99% of sources we do not control. In agentic mediation the brand gets reduced to a list of comparable attributes. When the interpretation is wrong, no channel exists to have it corrected. And the conversation that weighs most is not observable at all — which is why the previous three cannot be tended from a dashboard.
In all four cases the decision is uncomfortable, because the answer may be that there is nothing to tend.
From intention to result: search based on intent, not keywords, and what it means for content producers.
Awareness and consideration move inside the chats: users arrive already oriented, often in the conversion phase.
Forces the decision What AI traffic is worth
The user gets exactly what they asked for, not what they did not know they wanted: lateral exposure to unsearched information is lost.
Representation forms where you don't publish
Only 1% of the sources cited by LLMs comes from brand-owned sites. The other 99% of the representation gets built on material you do not control.
The brand reduced to comparable attributes
The agent compares attributes, not brands. If what differentiates you is not machine-readable, only price is left — and the uncomfortable question is whether there is anything to make readable.
You answer for what your chatbot asserts. For what a third-party model asserts about you, nobody answers — and no channel exists to have it corrected.
Forces the decision Who signs, and who answers
The conversations you cannot observe
The most influential assessment happens in private chats. Two partial measures remain — the impression without the question, the simulated prompt without the user — and the choice is which one you run decisions on.
