# Brand & PR

> What the change means for digital PR, reputation and social listening — earned sources as AI-visibility infrastructure.

Digital PR, Reputation, Social Listening and Brand Intelligence teams govern the sources and conversations that shape brand representation, knowing that decisive parts happen outside owned channels and in private chats.

## What changes for brand & PR

* **Earned sources become visibility infrastructure.** Only about 1% of the sources LLMs cite come from the brand's own sites; the rest is earned — forums, reviews, comparisons, third-party articles. Digital PR moves from support activity to the primary lever of AI visibility. See [Intent-based interaction](https://www.shaped-by-ai.com/en/impacts/what-is-happening/search-becomes-conversation/intent-based-interaction/) and [The customer journey shortens](https://www.shaped-by-ai.com/en/impacts/what-is-happening/search-becomes-conversation/the-customer-journey-shortens/).
* **Listen upstream.** Social Listening guards the *input* — the sources and conversations that feed the model's answer — while [AI Visibility](https://www.shaped-by-ai.com/en/impacts/roles/seo-ai-visibility/) measures the *output*. Three concrete shifts: the sources that feed generative answers matter more than traditional social channels; social signal quality dilutes under synthetic content; and the most influential brand conversation is in private, unobservable chats. See [Trust, AI literacy and calibration](https://www.shaped-by-ai.com/en/impacts/what-is-happening/cross-cutting-themes/trust-ai-literacy-calibration/).
* **No right of reply inside an answer.** A brand hallucination is reputational damage with no correction channel; the only lever is fixing the upstream sources. See [Representation forms beyond owned channels](https://www.shaped-by-ai.com/en/impacts/emerging-effects/representation-forms-where-you-do-not-publish/).

## Responsibilities and actions

1. Map relevant third-party sources and maintain their accuracy and consistency.
2. Separate source listening, AI-presence measurement and downstream traffic.
3. Define a procedure to detect errors, assess their risk and intervene on available sources.
4. Make coverage limits, correction times and dependencies on Content, Legal and AI Visibility explicit.
